- <p> DIED. AMY CLAMPITT, 74, poet; of cancer; in Lenox, Massachusetts.
- A beacon to aspiring literati, Clampitt was 63 when she published
- her first major collection of poems, The Kingfisher, vaulting
- her to the forefront of American poetry despite an unfashionably
- enthusiastic embrace of rich, heightened language and density
- of thought and allusions. Four more collections followed, as
- did a so-called genius grant in 1992 from the MacArthur Foundation.
