  15. <p>     DIED. AMY CLAMPITT, 74, poet; of cancer; in Lenox, Massachusetts.
  16. A beacon to aspiring literati, Clampitt was 63 when she published
  17. her first major collection of poems, The Kingfisher, vaulting
  18. her to the forefront of American poetry despite an unfashionably
  19. enthusiastic embrace of rich, heightened language and density
  20. of thought and allusions. Four more collections followed, as
  21. did a so-called genius grant in 1992 from the MacArthur Foundation.
